MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY.... this is why i am a proud republican.
if people knew their usa history they'd see that they are the blind ones because if republican took back everything they have done... schools would suffer, blacks wouldnt be in white schools or have any rights which i guess would be ok since they'd all still be slaves......... HUM... I AM SURE GLAD THAT WE DONT TAKE BACK WHEN PEOPLE TURN AGAINST US.

Well, the way it's taught has a lot to do with it.
Many teachers have no background in history, and so just follow the state mandated curriculum. I think those of us who enjoy it, have a common thread of very good teachers (and/or parents) who also enjoyed history.
The way I taught was to avoid dates, etc. and discuss issues. That seemed to work well.
For the record: Lincoln didn't "hate blacks", that's revisionism. He had the same prejudices as the VAST majority of Americans. He was opposed to slavery, and he DID free them. He ignited a war over his opposition to the extension of slavery to the new territories. And Geo. Washington DID kill Indians, and Indians DID kill men, women, children as well. There was a reason early
settlers hated Indians, and vice versa.
Do some reading. "Narrower the mind, the broader the statement".

Wonderflash, Chi C, and Quesion_Answer all make a wonderful point in their own way. American history is taught in every grade and yet they keep teaching the same candy coated fairytale in every grade. Schools water down history and suck anything remotely interesting out of it so kids won't want to learn it.
Do you know what Native Americans called George Washington? Baby killer. That's the great father of our country. They also convenienty avoid talking about how all the founding fathers had slaves.
There's a great book called Lies My Teacher Told Me, anyone who wants to start getting the truth should read it. That is th history that most Americans and many teachers don't know

It's mostly relevant to Americans. Just like asking why don't more Americans learn the History of Thailand, or Papua New Guinea? American history is most relevant to Americans, less relevant to the daily lives of the rest of the worlds population.

By all means i'd really wish these public schools would STOP teaching us so much American History! I've covered The revolutionary, Civil, Spanish, both worlds, cold, and vietnam wars pretty much every year since 2nd grade. Every year we are supposed to get a little more in depth, yet it seems as though every year they gloat a little bit more of how great and superior America is. Furthermore, Actuall wolrd history is scratched in 5th grade, and minimally covered in 9th. My opinion is that we shold be teaching much more World History. America isnt 'everthing' I think it very pretentious.

I dont know about them but all I remember from school was American History being shoved down my throat learning the same thing every single year. I can't tell you all the presidents in order but I could definitly tell you about every significant event thats ever happened and just because it was done a certain way then doesn't mean its necessarly right for it to be done that way now.

You betcha! Did you know that Abraham Lincoln actually hated the blacks? He wanted to ship them all back to Africa, and we idolize him as the giver of freedom to the African American population! Something is strange?

History, any history, should be carefully rationed and preferably not taught at all in school.
There are far more useful things people need to know about than a collection of dry, dusty dates and over-simplified, biased xenophobia.
