A couple times when I've come home things have seemed off. I keep losing things. My apartment is pretty small and I don't have a lot of stuff, so I am able to check through everything I own fairly easily. I wouldn't think that somebody had been in my apartment just because of losing things because it's possible I've lost them outside of my apartment, but I'm losing a lot of stuff lately. Also, a several months ago I lost my wallet with a set of keys attached. This morning I noticed it was rather cold in my apartment even though I had the heat on pretty high. Turns out my window wasn't locked. When its not locked, there is a gap and air comes through. The last time I opened my window was due to setting of the smoke alarms. I know I locked my window then. I'm sure I would have noticed the cold air coming in before now if I hadn't.

So anyways, I'm just wondering if there is a way to tell if I'm going crazy or if somebody is coming in.

Honey, anytime you lose keys to your house you should get you locks changed. If there was anything in your wallet with you address on it even more so. It does not cost that much money if you do it yourself (I don't know if it is allowed in an apartment building but your super can do it for you and SHOULD NOT give you any grief over it.) There are these little alarm things that you can buy at Walmart/Kmart for windows etc. that have a very loud alarm when they are opened. Usually 4-8 come in a pack and they use 1-2 batreries each. I believe they are under 10. bucks Get in the habit of checking your window locks before you leave each day.

You have received some excellent answers. Get your locks changed immediately. Also, you can purchase little locks for your windows that are inexpensive and easy to use.

After taking these safety precautions, follow up with some of the other ideas, such as the cellophane tape on the window. Place a couple of objects in a certain way; then check to see if they have been disturbed.

Be careful. You may have an intruder. Again, get those locks changed.

You can buy little security camera from Wal Mart for $50 -$100.
They hook up to your computer or VCR. One of them even has a motion detector to turn it on if someone enters the room. If you can't afford that a simple tell tell will work. Put a small piece of thread in between the door and door frame when you leave in the morning, check it before you open the door. If it is still there nobody has been in the apartment. If the thread is gone you need to buy a camera.

I have recently learned that the best way to know that someone has been in your home, BEFORE you even enter into your home (for your own safety) is to arrange a pair of slippers in a certain arrangement (i.e. one facing the door and one facing you) at the entrance of your front door. Make sure you remember how you've arrange the slippers. If anybody has been in your home, you'll know by checking if the slippers have been rearranged upon your coming home.

take a little piece of scotch tape ( celophane tape and stick it at the top of a door to the door frame or window frame. If someone opens the door it will not restick itself and you will know someone used the door or window. Spies use wetted hair strands
