Everything but the kitchen sink!! Seriously, anti-freeze, spare quart of oil, water, flashlight, jumper cables, matches, snacks, extra jacket, some basic tools, first aid kit.......I have this enormous military bag full of stuff like this in my trunk. It takes up way too much room. However, I live in a rural area and those things have come in handy from time to time! Only God knows what all is in that bag!

It depends on where you live.
I like to keep a rain poncho, and a cigarette-lighter powered spotlight.
I also keep a cigarette-lighter powered "bag" cell phone - it's old, but powerful - because even without a subscription, 911 is supposed to work.
I keep a blanket. I also keep a self-powered flashlight - the kind you have to shake or move to get a light, but in cold weather it will still work because it doesn't rely on batteries. I also keep a pair of gloves.
The main objective is to be able to see, keep dry/warm, and communicate. I guess I could also put food there, but unless you're traveling somewhere very off-track, that shouldn't be an issue.

I have an underwater escape hammer in my center armrest, there's a lot of water around here and I figured I might as well. Also have an emergency starter/battery charger thing, never used it on my car but I helped a stranded driver with it once.
