If you look at what the US garnered after the Spanish-American warwith the acquisition of Cuba , the Philippines , Hawaii(although not war related) and the Philippines, it seemed that the US was building on both sides of the oceans , strategic bases in Asia and close to the US border because of Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, a mini-empire in such a short period of time that its navy could freely roam the seas as future President Roosevelt would do as he showed off the American fleet in his term. If you were to look at a President who was the most imperialistic it would be William McKinley because of language because he believed with his background that the Philippines were hapless natives who needed to be instructed and evangelized as well as other island nationsto the great American way of life and education, even though the Philippines had and it still continues to be a bastion in religion and culture although with definite Americanized influence and motivation especially for the acquisition of wealth. His era was the time for imperialism and empire because with Europe focusing on empire as wealth the US desired the imperialistic attitude so they could become a leader on the world stage. Although I believe it actually was after the Civil War with our industrialism we became a world power the majority of historical scholars have mentioned that the victory of the US over Spain in the Spanish-American war not only lead to American flavor for imperialistic empire but also it established the US as a world power as the 2 world wars also shortly thereafter would indicate both industrially and militarially a lasting influence.
