In the movie Donnie Darko which I just watched for the fith time this week, [my obsession since I was ten], I have been wondering for a really long time why when Donnie breaks into Grandma Death's basement and gets jumped why does the guy keep asking him if he called the cops? How could Donnie have called the cops if he was in the basement and then on the ground with a knife to his throat the whole time? Does anyone know if the guy is talking to Donnie? Who else would he have been talking to?

i am a big fan a brain busters like donnie darko and butterfly effect myself...i guess its one of those plot holes where they had an extra scene where that dialog woodve made sense but since it woodve taken the movie in an other direction they prolly removed that scene.....still A GREAT FILM!!! i m still hunting down that frank costume!!! I believe that the assailant is referring to the approaching car and wondering if it's the police. It's a lonely road and the car is approaching at a fast rate. The assailant is nervous. Narratively, the assault puts the girl in the road, but then the assailant needs to exit so that Donnie can have a confrontation with the driver, so the assailant panics at the approaching car and flees.
