Well a couple of answers were close. It does have to do with the doctor but not what has been said so far.

Have you ever heard the saying about screwing a bolt in or out of the nut ? Righty, Tighty, Lefty, Loosey...

Well if your doctor was right handed he tied the knot clockwise (to the right) and you got an innie (like screwing the bolt in). If he was left handed he tied the knot counter-clockwise (to the left) and you got an outtie (like screwing the bolt out). ; - )

if the doctor or father cut the cord shorter it will be an innie because the cord begins to shrink back towards the stomach. if the doctor or father cut the cord longer theres more to shrink back and it only happens for a limited time. the baby always has a black plastic looking thing at the end of the cord that eventually falls off which also has an impact on the innie or outtie aspect.

It's all a matter of how the doctor tied your umbilical cord after he cut it.

I think it has to do with how the cord was cut at birth.
