Alot of the boards that are mentioned in the answers you have read are made in the same factory, i have been snowboarding for twelve years and have found every board mentioned to be a good solid board, it's pretty much impossible to buy a crap board in a ski shop now adays.....however i try to steer people away from burton simply because it gets way too glorified, there are a lot of other awesome company's that need more recognition in the states like ROME and ELAN snowboards, i'll be honest i find burtons to be for posers, although i do know some really good riders that use them, but whatever, it's just brand preference....

Most important item for snowboarding are the boots, you should buy new boots and get them fitted at a snowboard shop. Having a boot that fits properly (not too big, not too small, and comfortable) can improve your riding and make your day on the mountain more enjoyable cos your feet won't be in pain. for a beginner, a cheaper or even second hand snowboard and bindings is good enough for now, try ebay, or get a packaged deal (boots, board, bindings) from a snowboard shop (good value for money). Also buy last years models boards as they are on sale for a heavy discount. Most of the time its just the graphics that change from year to year.

Burton, Forum, Ride, GNU, Rome, and Capita are all very well made boards from professional companies. This statement goes for boards only. Binding and boot qualities vary.
Note: Forum snowboards was purchased by Burton last year. They are now owned and opperated by the same people. Forum models since 05-06 are great boards.

There arn't many poor snowboard brands these days any make sold in a proper snowboard shop will be good. My persomal favourites are Ride, K2, Forum and Gnu mainly because ive ridden boards by all these makes and found them to be excellent.
There are quite a few brands that i havent ridden yet so i might find them equally as good its just a case of trying as many boards/ makes as you can before buying and finding the one that suits you and your style of riding best. As for Forum makeing poor quality boards thats total crap yeah they are owned by burton now and are producing good boards but they were producing good boards pre 2005 also, and to the guy who said never buy a forum if they were good enough for Jeremy Jones,Peter Line etc they should be good enough for him.

Burton is the most famous, awesome for quality riding but has had a bad rep for durability. I think the Ride signature boards are all very good. It depends what you are looking for in a board really.
