I was looking to purchase an external hard drive as a 2nd way to back-up files but have no idea what type I should look for. I'd like to purchase one that holds atleast 200 GB, for a reasonable price.

I like the Maxtor shared storage drives, they have an ethernet port so they can run without a dedicated pc attached.

External hard drives are a good investment. Your choice mostly depends on how much storage do you need? Sometime you can catch one on sale but you just have to keep at lookout for one. Iomega and Seagate are two of the top choices rated by consumer reports. But if you find one that is reasonably priced I would jump all over it. Anything that you are pay less than a $1 per GB, the Seagate has a long warranty 12 months vs 3 for the Iomega.

USB is the way to go. Look at belkin or some site that you like and get opinions. I saw one that was shock resistant, I guess that is good. I saw one that was water resistant, I like that idea. For at home use, only, you can put an Internal, open the case and connect or disconnect the Power to switch it on and off. Backups should be done frequently and there should be two backup 'sets'. One set is from first install of OS, the clean one. Next is the incremental backups, these are done every day or so on CD-RWs because not many have Tape Drives in their houses.
4 CD-RWs can hold 2 Working ± OSs and some amount of workable data.
The idea is to backup the Stable OS , then all files,so that the Files on/in the OS can be retrieved when the system fails.
Care has to be taken here as one can get in legal trouble for a legitimate backup of a working Windows OS.

Seagate is one of the best options out there. They are quiet and run smoothly. 200 GB is a lot of storage. I have a 160 that holds more than I can ever cram on there, and I have 45 days worth of music, and I take at least 100 pictures a day, and they are all on there. Not to mention previous school work, things from work, graphics from the internet, etc. I also run about 5 programs off of mine as well. I definately recommend Seagate though, they have excellent reviews as well.

Instead of buying an external harddrive, better buy the harddisk casing...So that you can use the internal harddisk with any capacity along with the casing to make as an external harddisk....
So no need to worry on the capacity...Also you can use the casing for CD drive to make it as external CD drive....
