I am not sure when you are arriving. That would help figure the price better. Maybe try

Congress Plaza Hotel - on Michigan Avenue by Grant Park
520 South Michigan Avenue
Chicago, IL 60605

phone: 1-312-212-8192
fax: 1-312-427-2919

They usually have good prices. The location is really excellent. It is close to the Museum Campus (southeast of hotel). The Art Institute (east of hotel) is a five/ten minute walk away. Shopping on State (northwest of hotel) Street and Michigan Avenue (north of hotel) are close too. Buckingham Fountain (east of hotel) and Lake Michigan (east of hotel) are close. Buses and trains are close. If you will be here for the 4th of July, maybe call them and see if there is a room with a view of the fireworks. The hotel is older so there is a lot of tile decorations and such like years ago.

I visit Chicago at least once a year and I usually stay at the Downtown Sheraton. It's about a 5 minute walk to Navy Pier. You will get a room for under $250. F.Y.I. While you're looking at the other hotels in the area try looking at their specials I have found several times where the hotel will have a package that includes parking. Ifound a special like that not too long ago at the Chicago Hilton and Towers on Michigan Ave. They have great views of Grant Park and Lake Michigan. P.S. Try the Weber Grill Restaurant!

I normally use one of the major search engines like Expedia, Opodo, Travelbag....etc, though there are sometimes bargains to be found on the individual hotel group websites (I've found Intercontinental Hotels & Hilton group especially helpful). There is SO much to see & do. You're gonna be busy for the whole five days. If you get chance have a look at the official Chicago Tourism site (877-chicago?) as this will let you know of any special events or offers. I found the best, most economical way is to buy a CityPass. This highlights the most popular attractions at discounted rates. Museum Campus is definitely worth a wander whatever your interests & the CityPass will get you entrance to most of the attractions. Grant Park & Millenium Park are absolutely beautiful at this time of year & there are normally shows & exhibitions being held, though sitting by the fountains is a particular favourite of mine. Any trip to Chicago wouldn't be complete without visiting Lake Michigan & Navy Pier-try one of the lake/river cruises for a different view of the city. The summer gigs on the Pier & fireworks are spectacular. For anyone who enjoys a little retail therapy, the Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue is awesome & a great way to get a close up view of some of the city's most beautiful buildings. The social scene is fantastic - Rush Street is the focus for bars, restaurants & clubs but there are many more around the city. (Try the martini bar above the observation deck at the Hancock!) If you have enough time, try to catch a baseball game - it's a great way to spend a few hours. All in all, Chicago is a fantastic place & I can guarantee you won't get bored. The public transport is cheap, easy & efficient & guides are available from everywhere. If you do have any trouble chat to the hotel concierge as they are always helpful. I'm just jealous, I've gotta wait til next month to go back again!!

We've stayed at the Palmer House Hilton many times and it's a gorgeous hotel. Check their website--if you're flexible, you can easily get rooms for under $250. Also, the Hyatt Regency Chicago is a great hotel--you can walk to Navy Pier from there. Most parking rates in downtown hotels range from $35--$40/night.

The Allegro sometimes has some good deals, It's located downtown, and has some themed rooms like the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix. These special are usually over the weekend, parking can be expensive, you may be better off to use valet in the long run. Also check with a travel agent as they may be able to get hotel only packages (INCLUDING TAXES!) for a better price than you can get on-line or with a hotel directly. Taxes on hotel rooms are high in Chi town 12-15%!

Last time I was in Chicago, I stayed at the Hyatt McCormick Place. Although technically not downtown (it's south of the river but has a downtown view), it is pretty close to a lot of attractions. It is walking distance to Soldier Field, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, etc, and I felt very safe walking in that area. The bus stops right in front of the hotel that will take you downtown for a couple bucks, and there is also a train stop attached to the hotel. The hotel is very nice, and I paid $199 for my room.

my three favorites are hilton garden inn, doubltree, and the hilton. the hilton is the most expensive, however i have never paid over $200 for one night. it is on the south side of downtown, has a great view of grant park, and has beautiful rooms, a pool, fitness room, etc. the doubltree is across a side street from water tower place, therefore in the heart of the magnificent mile. it is within walking distance of shopping and if you get a room on the east side of the building it has a beautiful view of the lake. the hilton garden inn is the cheapest, has all the amenities, and clean rooms. this is about two blocks off of michigan ave, so it is the closest to all the restaurants. and near some very cool bars and nightclubs. all three of these hotels are within one mile of each other. i just rotate every time i stay downtown, because i love all three.
