On the drivers side inner fenderwell right behind the headlight (normal position) is a flat metal box about the size of 2 cigaretter packs side by side. It should have 2 cables going to it. This is your ignition module. My best guess would be start with that.
Sometimes a light smack with the wooden end of a hammer will make it work for a few days.

There could be a host of different things. If it turns over but will not start check the fuse box (under the hood drivers side) Check the fuel pump fuse. They are the old porcelain type and even if they look good sometimes they are just not making contact. Try rolling them with your finger wile still in place. If the fuse is good look under the right rear tire and look up. the fuel pump is right there. Now with the key in the running position and a test light, ground the test light, and test the contacts on the fuel pump. The contact with with the rubber cap on it. (if you have help have them turn the key wile you are close to the fuel pump and listen for a whirling noise If you got that then the pump is working) There is a fuel pump relay. I don't know witch one it is but is in the fuse box that could have failed. If all of this fails find a repair shop with the ability to run a diagnostic test on it. Your 420 has a connection that requires a connector unique to the car so call around first. I hope this was some help.

Need more information. By the way 1980 was the last year for the 450. 1988 offered a 300CE, 560SEC and a 560SL.

It's either Spark, fuel or the timing of the spark..
Check spark at plugs.. none?..work backwards.. Got spark.. ensure you've got fuel to the carb.. try a shot of starting fluid.. fast and easy way to know spark and timing are good. Got spark at plugs and fuel.. then it's the timing..

Try checking for fuel pressure - if nothing, then your fuel pump is bad.
