Both are classics, but Godfather for sheer breadth and beauty. A perfect film(films, really as 2 is a continuation. Ignore 3)
Goodfellas is more of a modern look at what the world that the Corleone's inhabited became. But it isn't as romantic and iconic as Godfather. Godfather is more like a biblical epic, with tests of loyalty and family. Coppola is more theatrical, romantic than gritty like Scorsese. The Godfather is also shot and lit (by a master) like an old master painting.
Love em both, but I still say Godfather wins.
If you haven't seen it, check out Millers Crossing. Excellent prohibition era Irish mob movie.

Goodfellas was good, but when the first Godfather came out,it was the first movie of its type that I saw, and that scene with the horse head in the bed gave me the ''heebie jeebies"for a long time.It also showed alot of just how the mafia works and the effects it had on the families. To me it made it even more real, it was and still is a great movie with alot of great actors.

Goodfellas had more action and I think explained a little deeper about the grit of the mafia.
Godfather was more classy and focused more on one Mafia family.
