I have to write an essay about To Kill a Mockingbird (by Harper Lee) but I don't know what I should write about. Topics I can write about include appearance vs. reality, racism, the seasons (spring, summer, fall & winter) & the title as a motif

First go to Wikipedia and read up on mockingbirds. What qualities to they have? Why are they different from other birds? Then do a little research on Boo. What was he like? What made him different from the people of the town? Find three things he and a mockingbird have in common, form your paragraphs by taking each quality and explaining why they have that in common, write an intro and a conclusion, and you're done.

I wrote an essay about the title for my exam. There are a lot of examples of the mockingbird theme, and you can incorporate almost all of the other topics into this topic. Most people in your class will probably write about racism, because it is the most obvious theme in To Kill a Mockingbird. So doing another topic would hopefully stand out.

There's some ideas about the topic on this site:

to kill a mockingbird is a great book with many topics.

i would say racism would be your easiest topic considering the whole book is based around it.

the title would be good too, but depending on how long the paper has to be, maybe harder.
you could use the quote about how killing a mockingbird is a sin, because they only try to make music for you. and about how this relates to life.

you could use the seasons for how scout and jem relate to things throughout the different seasons.
how they grew up and changed, and how different circumstances changed what they did.

etc.
etc.

I like the idea of writing on racism. About how much Finch was up against (the majority) to do what was right. I think that's a powerful thesis

I think I would have to take the appearance vs. reality one. It's the one that would be very flexible and that you can really make a lot of really good points of your own in it. I'd definately take this one without a doubt.

I'll give you three examples of racism/prejudice. One is when they are racist to Tom Robinson because he is a *****. Two is when Scout is made fun of since she is "being a girl." Three is when Aunt Alexandra is racist to Walter Cunningham.
