I am a 21 y/o qualified Paramedic with Emergency department experience. Is it possible to work enough during school? What percent of the tuition should I loan out?

When you go to medical school you are allowed to borrow funds above the cost of tuition in order to be able to afford to live. I get around $1500 per month to live off of. I have a few friends that worked on weekends occasionally, but no one is able to work full time at another job. For the first two years you will have several hours of class a day and then spend several hours studying each night. The second two years are spent in the hospital and are even longer (easily 70+ hours/week in some rotations). I am a fourth year student and will be graduating in a few months with around $170,000 in loans. It sounds scary (and is) but I should be able to pay it off soon.

One of my coworkers is a second year medical student, and while he does work, it's very part time. I couldn't imagine working anything other than a few hours a week while going to something as difficult as medical school.

If I were you, I'd get loans to cover all of the tuition. If federal loans won't cover the cost of education, try private loans.

Use your part time work to cover some of your day to day expenses, and try to cut your living costs as much as possible.

If you get a chance, email me. I'm a 23 year old paramedic that has considered going to medical school, but I ruled it out based on my age, and the expense and time involved. I'd love to find out how you went about it...maybe it still might be an option for me!

Good luck...

You can't work during medical school, its entirely too involved. If you don't make enough money going into it to take care of a certain percentage of tuition, then you'll be taking out loans for the entire amount PLUS an additional 20k or so to live off of.

student loans. you'll be making up for it for a while but once you start that private practice, all should be well.
