Each can be tested with a flaming or glowing wooden splint. If a flaming splint is placed in the mouth of a test tube of hydrogen you will hear a distinct pop from the reaction of the hydrogen with the oxygen in the air. A flaming splint placed in carbon dioxide - the fire goes out because CO2 does not support combustion. A glowing splint (set it on fire, then blow it out) will relight when placed in a test tube of oxygen gas.
