Currently GSM technology is used only in three major cell phone companies that is Cingular (which is now called the New A T&T), T-Mobile and Nextel. What this means is all the cell phones within these companies require a sim card on the back of the phone for activation. From what I seen the Motorola PBL is only used with T-Mobile.

GSM, or the Global System for Mobile Communications, is the most widely used system for cellular technology in the world. It is in use by over 2 billion people in 212 countries and territories. The key benefit of GSM is interoperability between providers and vendors. By using one standard, equipment from different manufacturers can be used by the same network. The other major benefit is the use of a Subscriber Information Module, more commonly known as a SIM card. By storing all contact information on a removable smart card, information can be easily transferred from one handset to the other.
