Calm but awake is the best time to hold it - when its moving, but not actively hunting. No music - snakes are very sensitive to vibration. If it's awake, it will move its head to sniff/taste your hand. They don't seem to recognize faces - they use smell (the tongue will actually taste the smells in the air.) yes, they can like some people and not others - just like any other animal. They particularly don't like lots of vibration or loud sounds - and sudden movements (like reaching for him quickly) are likely to cause it to strike (many don't see very well, but sudden movement is what they look for when hunting.)
Don't forget to research your particular snake. All species are different, need different environments, etc. And remember, the more you handle it, the more it will become accustomed to your scent - and is therefore less likely to mistake your fingers for food!

Either-but if it's asleep then make sure it knows you are there before you pick it up. I nudge mine on the side.
Snakes are deaf. Mine sleep all day and are more active at night. If it's curled up and not moving-it's asleep. If it's moving around, it's awake. It would be more likely to recognize your smell than your face. I've heard they can show preferences to certain people.
Banging on the tank, blowing in its face, irritates it, as do suddenly movements. Be calm and in a good mood when you handle your snake, and be gentle.

O.K. snake lesson, no snakes ever like any humans! The more that you live by this the less you will get bit. ALWAYS handle the snake with a hook or stick before you handle it with your hands. Stay consistant: if you handle it with gloves always wear gloves, snakes are animals of habit and instint changes scare them. Some snakes use heat pits to see and will not know what you look like just that you look like food. Some snakes see by movement but do care what you look like unless you are food. NEVER put a snake in your face! If you own a constrictor ALWAYS keep a bottle of Isopropyl alcohol next to the cage. In the case that you get bit a constrictor will not let go on its own, you will have to pour the alcohol on its face to get to release. Go to the next reptile show in your area and ask questions. Buy some books. Just remeber this is the ULTIMATE killing machine and we are just another meal or predator to them. Snakes have only been kept as pets for about 100 years now. Dogs have been kept as pets for over 100,000 years and they still go wild and turn on people. Loud noises and constant vibrations really put snakes on edge, so no handeling with the radio blarring and after running a vacuum. The list goes on and on. You will learn as you go,you can also contact me any time and I should be able to help. But more specifically remember this is not Fluffy, it may have been captive bred, but it is still naturally a wild predator by instint. Good Luck

HOLD IT at either time, but lightly stroke it first to let it know you are going to hold it and wake it if it is asleep.
LIKE MUSIC- they are deaf and can only 'hear' vibrations.
SLEEP- they nap a lot and you'll only know if it is awake or asleep by getting to know its behaviors. Sleeping snakes are very still.
FACES/PEOPLE- there is no real evidence that they recognize people in any way real way.
IRRITATION- vibrations, quick movements, tapping on the glass, the smell of rodents on your hands, being over-handled, being picked up wrong, getting too hot, etc. will bother them.

I can tell u now that u hold it when it's active and that it doesn't like music. It doesn't have eyelids, so it can't sleep. It will recognize u by your scent and it will probably like you best. It will probably be annoyed by too much attention.
BYE-happy to help.
