There are many cases of latex allergies, especially in infants, but also because latex seems to absorb more bacteria. Silicone is smoother for baby too. The latex rubs against itself or can implode and get stuck to it's own walls. It falls apart easier too if you use a dishwasher. I would use silicone hands down. It is healthier, more convenient for baby to use, and will last longer too. Also as a nice feature for parents, you can see thru the silicone ones too.

Really you wont know until your baby gets here. My son would only take a latex bottle nipple and a silicone pacifier! He's a strange one! Some people are allergic to latex, but you wont know if your baby is until it gets here, chances are it's probably not, I'm not sure if babies have allergies to silicone or not. If you can use silicone then stick with it, it's harder to find latex,

I preferred the silicone rather than the latex. I felt it was firmer, i thought the latex got mushy after awhile. I recently switched my daughter (she is 3 mos btw) from Nuks to Playtex Ortho Pro. I like them much better. They have different designs as the baby grows, that are slim and fit between the gums and don't put pressure on developing teeth. They are alot bigger than the average pacifier and took a little while to get used to, but she took to them pretty quickly and now she loves them.

I find that babies prefer the latex because it grips better. the silicone is more slippery. My baby loves her latex pacy.

Actually most people just use what ever their child prefers. There are all kinds of arguements on which products to use, of bottles, passys, and other products for babies. In the end parents use what their children prefer because a baby is not going to put anything in their mouth they do not like. I know that that was true for my son.

The clear one (I can't remember which one that is). It's more durable. My kids always managed to make holes in the brownish yellow ones with in an couple of weeks. Also the brownish yellow ones often get sticky on the inside and "Collapse" and you cannot get the thing to work properly again.

the baby will tell you which one is the best. it varies for each kid. my oldest child would only take the "nuk" brand, and my youngest would only take one particular "mam" (they both broke themselves of the pacis before they were a year old with no interference from me or hubby)

I used neither one. When my kid was upset, I comforted him myself instead of sticking a piece of plastic in his mouth. :) He turned out fine.
