It varies from person to person. Some people have a higher tolerance for pain than others so its not certain to say that you will definitely be pain free. But from personal experience (I have two on each ear), it does not hurt. You do feel a quick pinch but nothing painful. It's mainly the suspense and the tension, if you are scared, that you feel so you brace for it but it's over in no time. After getting it pierced you do want to be careful though if you are tucking your hair behind your ear or laying on it. It does hurt if you get it caught on something that tugs it, but if you are careful and clean it regularly you should be fine. :) UPDATE: A professional place is the best way to go, but a lot will not accept you if you are under 16 at all, and 16 or 17 needs parents permission. I got all of mine done with a gun and have had no problems but some people have a weaker cartilage and I've had a friend whose cartilage collapsed because of the gun. That is more rare though, I've only known one person to have that happen. Professional if you can, but if not, places like Claire's or Piercing Pagoda in the mall are fine (where I've had mine done)

Monkey is 100% correct. Since your cartilage is made of semi bone, the shock of the gun can shatter it and it'll never heal properly and you can have chronic pain in that area for the rest of your life (especially in cold weather). Plus, you cannot sterilize a gun properly. They've also been known to jam in such thick areas, which is not good either.

With a hollow needle, you know they can be sterilized or just single use. A professional will autoclave everything, ensuring that you won't end up with hepatitis. In the long run, it is much more worth it to go to a professional, rather than some punk teenager getting paid minimum wage at the mall.

Yes it is- when you get it done with a gun, your cartliage actually shatters, leaving it hard to heal or bad scars. Also a gun is made of plastic and is more receptive to communicating diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis. Your ear heals much better when it is done properly with a steralized needle.

Do not get it pierced with a gun. Request it getting it down with a needle.

go to claires or peircing pagoda.
get a plain gold or silver hoop or stud (your preference).

if going to claires:
-get non-infectionous spray (they give you stuff to clean it but just ask for spray and they will give it to you)

if going to peircing pagoda:
-use the non infection stuff they give you

I hope you like your new ring!
