In "Call of Duty 3" what does it mean when it says "You got an assist" when playing online?

you shot the person first but not enough to kill them

then someone else shot them and killed them you get the assist

but you do not get any points for it

call of duty 3 is one of the best games to play online i play all the time :)

It means that you assisted in the players death by shooting him and lowering his health, but someone else finished him off. You get a point for it i think.
