OK I'm black and I agree that Slavery is used too strongly as a reasoning for anything for the majority of black people. While I can understand why they hold on to it I also see that most blacks or at least many of the blacks in my community(which happens to be predominantly black) do little to make a better life for themselves. At the same time I do see a lot of racism still from other races. My two best friends are either Filipino or Guyanese, growing up together I found that it was harder for their parents to accept or trust me more so over the other, often times I would have to go through drastic measures to prove I wasn't a stereotypical black person they were labeling me to be. So the augments are just on all angles from my own personal experiences and I believe there needs to be a big change from all groups if there is ever going to be any kind of settlement on the issue of slavery as a crutch for black people today.

I agree I am not a prejudice person I have a lot of African American friends who ask this same thing. The thing is there are people on both sides who think the world owes them something I know as many white people who think the government owes them a hand out just because they had children...If you can feed them don't breed them.I know there are times it is hard and you have to ask for help there is nothing wrong with that but it is wrong to have children just for the extra money at tax time or more food stamps

Personally, I have never heard any friends who are black mention this ....doesn't really come up much in modern life. I do know people who talk about the holocaust quite a lot, but then some lost relatives in that as it is much more recent.
Do you know anyone personally who has said this? This whole thing sounds odd to me. Or are you just complaining about affirmative action programs (which address current discriminatory hiring practices)

Yes, SOME still do, I think its stupid, who are they blaming when there is no slavery anymore. all of those who do complain were never actual slaves. I'm Latina and i know that my Native ancestors use to be slaves but I never say anything about. i was never a slave and there are no slave owners that i know so there is no reason to say anything. People need to get with the 21st century. The more people think they deserve this or that because of their ethnic background the more they segregate themselves for society.

Slavery did not end 300 years ago. It ended less than 150 years ago. Black people were not allowed to hold certain jobs, vote, or eat in the same places as white people 40 years ago. Can't you see how this still has an effect on Black people today? There is still a lot of discrimation against Black people in America. There are still many inequalities. I don't think we want jobs because we are Black, but we do want an equal chance at getting those jobs. I know that it is difficult to understand if you are not Black, so if you truly want answers, talk to Black people about their experiences in America.

What do you mean "give it up"? When are you going to "give up" your racist tirade? If you will notice, most of the history of Black Americans lies within slavery. Then it goes from slavery to the civil rights era. It's not that we're whining, we're focusing on the truth. And no one wants jobs based on their skin color, but it would be nice not to be declined a job based on skin color. And it does happen...but I wouldn't expect you to have experienced that before.

People forget that it's only been about 40 years since African-Americans had any real access to all public schools.
It's only been about 50 years since African-Americans who wanted to take a trip had to plot their route carefully to be sure that they would be able to use a restroom accessible to them.
Crosses are still burned on the lawns of African-Americans.
It's probably been only 30 years or so since African-Americans could choose where they wanted to live in thousands of towns and cities in the U.S.
And all you have to do to see that racism is alive and well in the U.S. is to look at some of the questions and responses in the Answers forum.
In effect, then, I'd say that African-Americans still reap the effects of slavery, although we'd all like to pretend that everything is peachy keen.

The mentality persists because YOURS persists.
Yeah, actually, the Jews do still complain, and they have a lot to complain about. So do we. If you don't like it, stop being such an ignoramus and maybe blacks won't have anything to complain about anymore. There's such a thing as poor white trash too.
