Any time someone leaves a band without explaination, rumours start to fly. I had heard that he was simply burned out and wanted to leave. Also, remember that he was NOT an original member of the band ... he didn't join up until Construction Time Again, I believe.

Alan answers this question in several ways on his website in the Q & A section
http://www.recoil.co.uk/forum/qa/dleave.htm

According to him, leaving was about multiple things, wanting to produce outside people, work with other people, tension in the band, he just wasn't enjoying it anymore, being in a pop band seemed a bit juvenile, he didn,t want to be in a pop band for the rest of his life, etc.

His solo work after DM is very interesting, but not very DMish - you can find out all about it at his website http://www.recoil.co.uk/

He left because of unsatisfactory working conditions in the band( according to his press release). Essentially, he felt that his efforts were not appreciated by the band, and specifically Martin Gore.( note: this was the rumor, Alan never said directly he was unhappy with Martin, i dont think)
Alan also wanted to explore different musical territory, and when you are in a highly popular band, it is difficult to do so( as Dave has said). So he had to leave in order to try different things.
Hope this helps
