How can people in the 21st century still believe in a god when things like Hurricane Katrina, The Holocaust, The Tsunamis, The Klu Klux Klan, Wars, Saddam Hussein, etc. are allowed to occur on "God's Green Earth"? In my personal opinion the creation of most of the world's religions was because of misunderstanding of natural occurances...

Agreed. And I can explain.
Fear of death (wanting to live beyond that or others to live beyond that)
Lack of education (the more educated a person is, the less likely they are to believe in God, and that is a fact)
Indoctrination (by parents, mostly) in childhood
Societal pressure (from friends, neighbours, etc.)
Intellectual laziness (can't explain something and can't be bothered to find the real explanation? Chalk it up to God)
Egocentrism (need to believe that one is at the center of the universe...we're not even close, and there may not even be a center)
The Bible - one of the most ridiculous, mistranslated, poorly edited, blatantly man-made books of all time

There's just too many people. Our earth would be overcrowded if people didn't die. I understand God's plan when we over create. However, I am just as appauled by the ignorance shown by people. The races are not the problem. The problem lies where we were brought up. Whatever book we choose for religion is just a set of rules. GOD is in our hearts. No matter what religion (book of rules) we follow we all want the same thing. Stop hating what others have and try to appreciate what we have then help others achieve the same. The world would be a better place.

Ancient cave man times, religion was first adopted. It was used to explain the thunder in the sky, the capture of there herd among other stuff, so yes in a way religion is a misunderstanding of natural events. People need something to believe in, life after death, a reason to exist, there must be something better than all this as you mentioned, hurrricanes, holocausts, wars. If there is agod, how could he allow this. In Quebec, Canada, a coach bus turned over with 40 kids aged 8-10, not one kid died. Is this not an act of god? Probally not. just luck..but when religioun got involved it was all "thank god"

with government "schooling' and the indoctrination into evolutionism taking the place of education, it is a wonder people can think as much as they can!
