Contributing to the household income helps to create a sense of pride and accomplishment. Not participating leads to a feeling of entitlement and perhaps even laziness.

It depends.Sometimes it can be really hard on kids to have to work because then they will fall behind on school work(most people I know who are working have) and they don't get to do many extracurricular activities.Which is something many colleges seem to consider so highly.
Many people I know are trying to earn money to save for college and just spending money.
But if the family needs the money then that's a different story.

I think that it's good for a teenager when they're 15 to get a part-time job that's legal that brings in some spending money for themselves so they know how it will be when they have to account for their own money.
I think it's important that parents push it for that reason and not because they want the child out of the house or they want the child to work because the parent doesn't want to.
The child needs to know what coming home with a paycheck just for him/herself feels like and that sense of accomplishment that comes with it.
I think that a child would be more motivated to work if they knew that they would get to keep thw holw paycheck for themself than give it up to they're parents.
Of course, then with a job, whoevers taking them to work, they should contribute to gas money if they're not 16 when they have a job.
Other than that, I think it's only fair for the child to have their own money to keep and spend how they like.

My mother made me work when I was a kid...I think I lived to see another day. After I graduated from High School, she told me to pay rent, or get out. I hoofed it, and have been supporting myself ever since.
