I live in the SF Bay Area. The 1989 earthquake was about the strongest I've ever felt, but because I live northeast of SF (and pretty far from the epicenter) we had no damage.

Little earthquakes are always occurring, most of which we don't feel at all. Some earthquakes are side-to-side shaking, while others are very sharp jolts. None are exactly the same.

They can be scary, no doubt about it. When I was a child in elementary school back in the 50s, there was an earthquake which caused my mother to come over to the school to make sure we were okay!

I have been in several 6.0 and higher. For the most part it was like a fun amusement park ride. If you keep your house safe, furniture bolted to the walls you will be safe in all but "THE BIG ONE" and we all gotta go sometime
PS I live west of Bakersfield about 5 miles from San Andreas Fault, and there is a small fault east/west about 1/2 mile south of my house
