I have heard that Carbon Monoxide is very heavy and so the detector should be placed near the floor. Does anyone know if that is true? I have a 8 month old baby and need to know!

a tenant in one of my apartments has a Carbon Monoxide detector, it was on her ceiling and it went off. (not a false alarm, furnace needed service) so in my experience, I don't think it matters. I think they sell them as a smoke alarm/carbon monoxide combination thing too, so I would guess it wouldn't matter.

As a professional HVAC Contractor,
Carbon Monoxide is a tasteless, ordorless gas, that is the same weight as the air your breath.
So it doesn't matter where in the room it goes.
But is always best to be on a inside wall so a possible draft doesn't trick it into not working.
It is alway best to use a line voltage model, as battery operated models are known for false alrams.
Its best to buy one from a HVAC professional, but large discount home centers also can be a good bet.

CO should be about neutrally bouyant in
air, so near the source is the best bet if you want maximum sensitivity or near the return if you get frustrated by false alarms and
at eye level a good idea so that it is
always a reminder.

CO2 should be a little denser and pool near the floor in a stagnant room. but it is not as
toxic as CO.

Just look up the molecular weights of
molecular nitrogen (N2 = 28), oxygen (O2= 32), carbon dioxide (CO2= 44), carbon monoxide ( CO = 28).

The reason for the carbon monoxide detector is to warn you of a problem. Having it down in the basement not a good idea if your in bed. Have it where you are living upstairs near the door of the basement and garage .

The instructions that come with your CO detector will guide you in its placement. CO is NOT heavy, it freely circulates. In a typical two story home you would do well to locate one in the upstairs hallway near the bedrooms. And another downstairs in the living/dining type areas.

CO=Carbon Monoxide. (CO2=Carbon Dioxide, submarines have these detctors.)

Carbon monoxide detectors are made to plug into a receptical.so close to the floor will not hurt a thing. They are also a combination smoke alarm which is mounted higher.Sounds to me like it really dont matter as long as you have one

Best Co Detector

HVAC hubby says put it near the fresh air return or a vent. This way the detector is in an air stream likely to carry the gas, and quickly detect it.
In reading the other answers, he wanted me to put the word out to never put the Co2 detector too near the source. This could cause it to go off too often, like your smoke detector near your kitchen. This could cause you to become complacent in the alarm and not pay attention at a crucial time.

These pages say to be near the device that you feel has a risk (ie: furnaces) although the last link has advice to instal along each floor.

"..CO alarms should be placed near sleeping areas but alarm owners should also consider having them on each floor or close to anything that burns fuel - like a furnace or gas water heater...

Co is slightly lighter than air, and should be close to the usage point, such as a bedroom or a hall way leading to them.

Not near a furnace. If you want to check the furnace, have an HVAC tech check it with a metering device.
