Wash them in the hottest water the fabric can stand and add either bleach or borax.
Also, check out why your grandmother's clothes are so saturated with urine. If she has to be changed, is someone doing it more than once a day? Good luck!! You've got a good heart doing this for her.

I agree with Holly. There should be no reason anyone has urine-soaked clothing. From diapers for babies to "attends" diapers for older adults and those with bladder problems: there are pads of all shapes and sizes. If my family member was in a home and had urine-stained clothing, I would want to find out what is going on.
After washing urine soaked diapers/nappies - cloth ones - when my children were babies in the 1970's I never had a urine smell in my dryer... ???
Maybe before you wash the clothing - put them through the washing machine for one cycle with NO detergent; that would rinse the clothing. Then, do the regular cycle.
Sometimes when I have smelled something horrible, the "smell" sort of stays in my nose for a long time - not sure why.
Good luck with this problem

RE:
How do you remove urine smell from clothing of an elderly person?
My grandmother lives in a nursing home and I do her laundry weekly. It is getting where the smell is getting really bad even after washing them. My clothes dryer is also getting an odor or maybe my imagination. Is there anything I can add to my wash to help combat the odor?

I use Gain in my Great Aunts clothes, along with clorox2 bleach for colors, and Gain liquid fabric softner, and don't forget the Gain drier sheets! For those tough coffee urine stained clothes, I would add a half cup of vinigar. Good Luck!
P.S.
Do you know what happends when you mix vinigar and baking soda?????? Put it this way, you can unclog your sink with it!!!!...Iam not so sure about putting the 2 TOGETHER in laundry

Try adding about 1/2 cup of white vineger and some baking soda to the rinse water, and see if that helps. It won't harm the clothes. And it would not smell like vineger either. I use vinegar in my rinse cycle, and it acts like a fabric softener also.

get odo-ban and use that or get white vinegar and give that a try. Vinegar works on so many things it's great to have on hand. You can even make the greatest leather/wood cleaner polish by mixing equal parts white vinegar with olive oil.
Good luck!

use a really fragrant laundry detergent like gain and buy natural tea tree oil. Place about 10 drops of tea tree oil in your laundry load. It has antibacterial and antifungal...etc. properties which dispel the odours and make the clothes safe to wear hygenically as well as really fresh smelling. i've tried it and it works really well. Also you can use te tea tree oil for cuts bruises and such. Its very mutipurpose.

Wash the clothes in super hot water no matter what the color instructions say...Arm and hammer laundry detergent works so/so, and Sam's club sells a product called "Odo ban" that works wonders.
