I'm concerned that I'm going to buy something earlier and then immediately regret that I didn't have my ear to the ground and wait for the next big thing right around the corner. Upgrading an OS can be such a drag, so if its worth it, I'd rather wait and buy a new OS. Any thoughts?

Leopard is set to ship in March, so if you can wait.....wait.

I've upgraded my Mac OS twice and it's simple as pie and takes about 40-50 minutes.

So if you did buy and then upgraded it wouldn't be a big deal. As far as Macs lineup of intel machines, I havn't heard that they will make any changes to their machines to support Leopard, so you're safe there atleast.

But do get a Mac, you'll love it!

Oops wrong animal it's Leopard not Panther

Well you have to ask yourself, have you ever been a Mac user before? Are you going to be using all of the capabilities right off the bat?

Your jump is not new to Yahoo answers and what people like yourself have to realize, assuming you've never used a Mac, is that there is a learning curve.

I'm not trying to sway you from buying a Mac, but just be a little cautious before diving right in, especially if you will be spending over $1,000.

Most Mac OS upgrades are about $99 ($69 education cost) so even if you get something now, the cost of upgrading is not that bad. But if you can wait, you'll save on the upgrade.

Either way, you're going to love the Mac. Here's something to think about... When I bought my first Mac, it was a G4 with Panther. A week or two later, Tiger was released. I then found out that Apple was running a special where if you bought your Mac within a certain time period before the Tiger release, you could purchase the upgrade for the price of the media, or about $10. It's possible that they would do the same with Leopard. I imagine that they would.

Waiting for the new OS is the the wiser choice since like you said, it's a drag to upgrade your OS. Besides, the computers that ship with the newer OS (Vista/Leopard) are better suited to handle the power of those OSes compared to the old computers.
