I was in an earthquake in Acapulco in 1978. I was staying in a house on a cliff, taking a nap in the afternoon, when I woke up and thought my brother was shaking my bed, trying to wake me up. I kept telling him to leave me alone, when to my horror I opened my eyes and saw that there was no one in the room but me...It was very scary. I flew out of bed and ran into the other room when my brothers and sisters were all standing around screaming, while things shook and pictures fell and walls cracked. It was weird, because, not coming from an earthquake prone area of the country, I had no idea where to run. If you run outside, it's still shaking. It's shaking everywhere. It was a 6.0 earthquake and was over in about 30 seconds, but it seemed like it lasted forever. The aftershocks went on for days afterwards. I noticed them while I was sitting in restaurants. Before you could feel the shaking, you'd see the water in the water glasses start to shake and then you knew an aftershock was coming.

I have been through a few, some people are scared to death, but they don't bother me. I actually think it's kinda cool. The last one I was in, I was asleep when it started, I woke up to this really loud BANG BANG BANG it was like someone was taking the house and lifting it up and slamming it on the ground....... it took me a few seconds to kinda wake up and realize what it was, then I walked out into the front room and the hanging lamps were swaying back and forth like crazy and stuff was falling off the shelves....... it lasted maybe a minute or two and then it was over. Another one I was in I was in eighth grade in homeroom on the second floor, my desk was by the window, everyone was screaming and diving under their desk, I just sat there watching the flagpole outside flop back & forth, and pieces of the ceiling fall. It was pretty cool.

A little frightening-- but it depends on how big it is and how long it lasts.
Sometimes, as soon as you realize its an earthquake, its over and you don't have time to be scared.
Other times, you have to run to the door jamb and hang on so you don't get shaken out.
