I have a large softspot for books that have a struggle with their faith, not because they don't believe, but because their faith has cast them out. However, I won't read any books on this subject unless they're written by Chaim Potok. Yes, biased.
I can always pick up a Holocaust book or one on a genocide and be completely enthralled because, even though the story of death and destruction has been told many times, there's alwasy a different angle on the approach, a different viewpoint.
I also love historical fiction, although most of that falls under Holocaust/genocide eras.
I don't care what kind of ending there is as long as it's good and satisfying. If it ends in romance, the two getting together in the end, I want to feel wholly satisfied and heartbroken because I fell in love with the characters and didn't want it to end. If it ends with death and destruction, I want to feel completely heartbroken because I fell in love with the story.
The stories that I fell in love with and, therefore, left me completely heartbroken:
The Night Trilogy-- Elie Wiesel
The Piansit-- Wladyslaw Szpilman
Falling Leaves-- Adeline Yen Mah
Animal Farm-- George Orwell
The Chosen-- Chaim Potok
The Promise-- Chaim Potok
My Name is Asher Lev-- Chaim Potok
The Gift of Asher Lev-- Chaim Potok
In the Beginning-- Chaim Potok
The Thief-- Megan Whalen Turner
The Queen of Attolia-- Megan Whalen Turner
The King of Attolia-- Megan Whalen Turner

I enjoy a good thriller. If you want to read one I really like try "Angelhair" by Joseph Noga. The followup "Until Then" is just as good as the first and keeps the story going. You can get a free preview of both to read on the authors website www.joenoga.com if you want . Enjoy the read

Well, I read some fantasy. When I'm not reading fantasy, I read fantasy. Or sometimes, just to be different, I will pick up a fantasy book.

I prefer to read fantasy. Dragon, elves, wizards, magic, etc that live in made up worlds interest me. When I read fantasy, it is my stress reliever. It takes me to another place far from reality and the everyday grind.
