I'm buying my friend's 5 yr old Toshiba laptop.
Any jiggling of the power cord ... instant power failure. I don't think its the cord. Can the plug-in be replaced? If so, a clue on the cost would be awesome. Thanks

Toshiba would have a better idea on the cost of the repair. On some notebooks, the power connector can be a separate circuit board, while on others the connector is soldered onto the mainboard. You can try search Toshiba for parts using the model number of your notebook. Most manufactuers will not resolder loose componenets, they will replace the whole part. So if the connector is soldered onto the mainboard, you would be looking at a mainboard replacement. Very expensive.

The replacement power connections can be costly to repair, and since the laptop is 5 years old you should consider buying a new computer anyhow. The connections can range anywhere from $80-a few hundred dollars depending on the type, and if the connection itself can be replaced or if its integrated into the power supply.

It could be a simple soldering of the connector is needed. If you know a reliable electronics guy it would be cheap, a computer repair shop might cost you $50 USD

Well, it ain't cheap, especially if it is an old laptop. You see, the parts are out of production. Good luck with that.
