It is difficult to live in the public eye when you are single because the media is constantly looking for the new "it" couple, who is seeing who and who is backstabbing who. And when the media finally finds that new "it" couple that everyone is interested in, they like to fabricate and exaggerate stories to keep them on the cover of their magazines because they sell. Then in some cases it becomes difficult for these couples to realize what is true and what is not in their lives (like in Jessica Simpson's case). Then in other cases, one person will become more "likeable" or more popular in the media and could either bring the partner "down" in likeability (like in Britney Spears' case). And once the people loose their career, it usually ends up that they loose everything else, including their relationship. Overall, if the couple remains more to themselves and not so much in the public eye (like Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner) I think it proves to be easier to make things work.

Imagine all your moments being watched and criticized and talked about publicly. Now add that to the fact that they really are just regular people with cool jobs, that's all. They divorce for the same reasons that everyone does. Human nature. And stuff happens.
