Try the Shadow Saga series by Christopher Golden. The first book is called Of Saints and Shadows. I loved it so much, I ran out and ordered the remaining books in the series right away. They definitely give a new twist to the vampire genre.

For a great over all book you can't beat the first 5 books by Laurell k. hamilton, charlaine harris "southern vampire" novels that are being made into an hbo series and are good, P.N elrod's vampire Private Investigator novels are okay, Nora Roberts "Circle Trilogy" are a very good set complete stores.

Try Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite. It show a more modern type of vampire including the significance of things such as evolution. It is very homo-erotic though (almost all of her books are) so if that's not your thing, you may want to pass it up.
