most schools require students to read "old" texts like ancient greek tragedies or shakespearean plays. many students wonder why they should read those texts instead of more contemporary materials. i think its better to read them than the present. but why?? help!

I've never understood this. If I have a choice between epic battles in The Iliad or Grisham whining on about yet another lawyer with a heart of gold, the choice is clear. As a teacher and a writer, I have to accept that the best has already been written.

Because most of the contemporary literature has it's basis in classic Greek plays. Comedy / tragedy, the use of 3 acts to tell a story, the battle of good vs. evil. Why go to the retread when you can go to the source and understand it there?
