I think it's a matter of opinion. I prefer to knit, but it is true that crochet is more forgiving. And for a beginner the fact you only have to deal with one needle rather than two would be a plus I'm sure!

I love knitting and crochet, just so you know. Both take a lot of patience to learn but as someone who does both, i will say crochet is easier. It goes faster for larger projects like afghans, and you don't have to worry about a dropped stitch causing a run down the entire piece. However if you primarily want to make clothing, you will likely have better results with knitting. The finished products are lighter, and more professional looking, where as crochet garments tend to be bulkier. When you're just starting either is likely to be frustrating, keeping the same number of stitches per row can be daunting at first. I would say, learn which ever one you can have an actual person teach you, rather then just trying to pick it up from a book, and once you've gotten the hang of one it's not hard to attempt the other. The fun thing is that even if your first scarf turns out a little bigger at one end or kinda wider in the middle, you'll still feel happy having actually made something!

Being a person who has knit for a while (5 years) and is trying to learn crochet... I think knitting is easier! I just can't seem to figure out what holes to put the hook through or how to keep the stitch size even. I have also taught people (including my boyfriend with big hands and no real crafting skills) how to knit and they have picked it up very quickly! Another nice thing for learning how to knit is the website: http://knittinghelp.com where there are videos on how to do everything from basic to advanced techniques. I haven't been able to find such a website for crocheting. The only upside I do see about crochet is that (at least I've heard) projects go a little faster. Knitting at first goes very slowly, and it can sometimes feel like you're not getting anywhere.

I've heard from many people that it's much easier to crochet, and faster too, but I personally can never find a good set of instructions. Knitting is more complicated and a bit more time-consuming (from what I can tell, I'm not an expert), but it's easier to learn, and I think overall easier to use for projects beyond a simple scarf.
Yet again, I don't know--I've only every been able to learn how to knit, though I tried learning to crochet once or twice.

Crochet is much easier. There are lots of great sites on the web that offer easy instructions. I've tried repeatedly to learn to knit and haven't been able to get the hang of it, but crochet is so easy I can read or watch a movie while I work.

Crocheting is much easier. In knitting, you have to use 2 needles, and you have to hold them close together so the yarn doesn't spread out too far; in crocheting, you have one hook, and you don't have to worry about the stitches coming off because of the bent over end. You have much more freedom and you can use the hook to turn a corner too, like when you're finishing off an afghan. I'm sure you'll like it!

Totally crochet, since with knit its much easier to miss stitches and casting on/ knit/purl is just kinda complicated. Both include counting but I'm pretty sure that crochet's system is less complicated, and you can make much more delicate things than knit!

IMO, crochet. One needle, not two. And the needle has a hook on the end. I never learned to knit...never got past the casting on part. Good Luck!

Mom does both, she said crochet is easier to learn and more forgiving. Others say knitting is easier. Try both and see which one catches your fancy.
