1. Contains oxygen, which we breathe to survive.

2. Protects us from cosmic rays, which would toast our DNA quickly.

3. Helps retain heat (aka the greenhouse effect) to keep us warm

4. Helps weathering of rocks to produce soils, which we use to grow food.

5. Burns up lots of meteors, so we can live without fear of getting killed as we walk down the street, except by drunk drivers and random a**holes.
