Language development actually begins very early. Around 4-6 months babies will often begin to "babble" usually one syllable sounds often with the d, m, and b sound. 7-12 months you will hear multiple syllable sounds with repeated syllables so often babies will say things like mama or babababa or dada. Occassionally sounds come out of a baby's mouth that you swear are words. Around 12-15 months baby's will begin to be intentional in their words and say baba when they see their bottle or recognize mama and dada. All children develop speech at different ages and these are basic guidelines. Some babies speak earlier and some much later.

All children vary in this. Some don't start talking until 1 years old, some will say dada or mama at around 6 months. If your child isn't talking around 2, then it is time to have them tested for hearing loss. My daughters were both talking fluently by 18 months, they could carry on a conversation and be understood. I used to sit them in their carriers by me while I did dishes and sang the alphabet song over and over while they were small. They do catch on to it. I read nursery rhymes to them all the time too. If you don't talk to your babies they will be slow at learning to talk themselves. The same with walking, the more you work with them, the faster they will learn.

Most baby's learn to walk from around 11 months to 15 months. My son started sitting up at 6 months and was crawling around 8 or so. He didn't start walking really well until about 13 months so, I am guessing yours may be walking in the 11-12 mo range! Get ready to run around alot more. :) I lost 15 pounds in 6 months. lol

My friends litle girl started saying one syllable word at about 1 year old and it has blossomed from there. She is 2 now and can say complete sentences even using words such as: the (cat), a (cat), etc. I think she is really smart though. Another friend has a 3 year old son and all he can say is mama, daddy and milk. I think it really depends on how much interaction they recieve from the parents and other adults as well as with children of the same age.

All babies are different. I have found with my own children, my first two children didn't talk very well until they were 2 years old. They are only 18 months apart. By the time I had my 3rd child, my first child was 10 years old, my second child was 9 years old. My 3rd child was speaking perfectly at 14 months old. Our pediatrician and I agree that what helped my 3rd child to speak so well at that young age was........ Us constantly talking to her, and her brothers constantly talking to her. When she would hear other kids talking to her she responded faster, and wanted to speak earlier, to communicate with them.
