I am new to owning fish and just recently got three tiger barbs and 3 otos for my 10g tank. I recenlty did a 25% water change yesterday and today I found that there was a rise in ammonia .5. I just want to know if the ammonia from the fish will be toxic to me I have them in my bedroom. I would appreciate any help, thanks!

No, it's not the least bit dangerous to you, just your fish. But, if you are properly taking care of the water to eliminate the ammonia problem, which will kill the fish, then you wouldn't have to worry about it harming you, even if it could anyway. Btw, you have a perfect quantity of fish for your tank. Thank you for not overstocking! And thank you for knowing to check your water parameters. Good luck and have fun!

Hi there The ammonia in the water is the result of fish waste in the water and has no affect on you what so ever because the fish breathe oxygen in water and we breathe oxygen in the air. The ammonia will confine itself in the water and must be lowered so that your fish will not get poisoned by levels too high. Besides measuring the level, the water will become cloudy. Unconsumed food will also break down and affect water quality. Feed your little guys twice a day as much as they can consume in 10 minutes. Have a great year and keep up the great job.

No the ammonia will not harm you. But it will harm your fish so you should try to get it down. The best way to do this to add some ammo chips in a bag (get this at your pet store) or used a nylon stocking and put it in your filter.

ammonia itself is toxic, however disolved in water breathing it in is in too small of quantities to harm you. No vapors will escape from the water in your tank, even thru evaporation. You are fine.

Ammonia is .5 of air which means even if it did evaporate, the gas is lighter than air.
