we are also planning to go in July. My husband has family on the island he has not seen in 7yrs. My children have never met their grandparents. We have talked about this issue as well. As of right now, control of the country is in his brother's hands anyway. It will continue to be in Raul's hands. I think even if Castro dies, they will delay announcing it for quite some time due to the fact they don't want any major changes. they are as we speak, planning their course of action. The Cuban people really don't pose much of a problem, they are fairly passive. the problem will lie in if the US decides it doesn't want to let Communism continue after Castro's death.

I'm going in two weeks so I'll let you know. But generally speaking is very safe.About Castro most of the Cubans think that he is been dead for quite a while now but the government doesn't wanna give the news to the world in order to make a safe transition.I'm Cuban and I speak to my family almost everyday and that is what they said, besides because I let Cuba 7 years ago and I know the way the government try to manipulate the news. This is just a rumor is not confirm but try not no ask directly about this to any Cubans because they can get in trouble if they got caught badmouthing the government.

I would think that in general Cuba is an ok place to visit, just like any other destination. I think tho that if/when Castro dies there could be some unrest.

If you're going to go, I guess have an exit strategy if needed.
