I *love* the story. It is a great book! Put away all your homework and read it for pleasure and you might enjoy it. That's what I did. I read it for pleasure and fell in love with it and then when it was required reading a few years later I was able to approach it academically. I think when novels are approached academically first they're usually boring because you're trying to analyze them and the author NEVER intended the book to be read that way. They were written to tell a story the reader would enjoy.

The book gives an excellent insight into the glamorous, excessive era in which it was set. Human nature has not changed since the Art Deco period; just the players.

I found Fitgerald at times wordy, but still a good read.

In many ways, The Great Gatsby is *the* quintessential American novel. Therefore, it deserves a place on the list of "great books."

I had to read it for my sophomore English class so it's been a while for me, but I remember thinking that it was a bit complicated plot-wise, but overall had a powerful impact. The end, when you get there will shake you a little bit. I seem to remember after being totally done with the novel, really liking it, but not loving it.

I haven't read it myself, but a friend of mine read it last year in her Modern Lit. class and she said it was very good.
