I was told by the nurse when changing a boy's diaper I should point his penis downwards before closing up his diaper, but my son's penis stays in the upward position because it is like a little button and it's not big enough for it to be pointed downward and because of this the urine often escapes his diaper and gets on his clothes. Any suggestions for me? Any similar experiences?

When my son was a newborn I had the same problem with leaks. Before my son was born I had never changed a diaper before and was clueless. I assume you're using disposable diapers. Here are some things that I wish someone had told me: make sure that the diaper is the right size, too big or too small will cause leaks. When you open a new clean diaper to put it on, make sure you pull open the side flaps that run along the sides. Don't be afraid to pull the diaper tight when you fasten it. And after you put it on check the leg openings and the back to make sure that none of the diaper is tucked in.
And always keep extra clothes for baby AND you in the diaper bag (or car).

It sounds like you aren't getting the diaper tight enough around his waist. They stretch so much, and you can't get them too tight. I never heard of pointing a babies penis downward. LOL That is cute and sounds pretty lame.

Unfortunately, babies leak. The best way to deal and it works for my son is make sure that diaper is pulled tight, and is the right size. There's nothing you should do about "moving" his penis.

Try to fold the top of the diaper under a little. then snugly fasten the diaper.

Let his penis point whatever way is comfortable for him.
Are you using disposables? If so, make sure you get ones for BOYS -- the girls ones have more padding lower down, the boys ones have more padding higher up.

I would suggest a smaller diaper and making sure it is fastened tightly.
