he needs more calcium. mine has the same problem a lot. I'l get it uner control and then it gets bad again. try crushing up shells and putting them in the water, or getting liquid calcium and adding that. I haven't tried the liquid calcium yet, but I've heard it works well and plan to get some this week some time.

Hello. I have had snails and raised some babies as well. A major problem with your snail could be lack of calcium. This would cause a great breakdown on the shell. It is a serious problem. PH would play a small factor. What you need is to raise the amount of calcium in your tank (harmless to fish) to help him rebuild his shell. You can get a product called Aragamilk. It is sold by a company called Foster and Smith. The website is www.drsfostersmith.com There you can get the free catalog or order directly off of the website. I have raised many baby snails and had a giant apple that lived for over 3.5 years!! The lifespan of a giant apple is about 1-2 years. His name was Speedy and he was a very good boy. Part of my success with Speedy was that I was able to keep his shell very strong and that keeps the immunity up and parasites/fish away from his body. I have had mystery snails before, as well. If you need any more help...drop me an email. : ) Good luck. The Aragamilk is totally safe for fish and will not affect PH or other enviromental factors. You can not overdose and it is really pretty cheap. Under $10 for a huge bottle. : )

The sails need calcium for their shells to stay in good shape so check it. I'm not sure what the level should be in fresh water.

What kinds of fish do you have in your tank? Water shouldn't cause this, so it may be that one of your fish tried to eat the snail.

Never use tap water. It does horrible things to water creatures. That was probably why your snail's shell was eaten off.
