A quick scan doesn't show me anyone getting credit for the Big Crunch theory. Like most important theories in modern science, it's very probable that you will not be able to trace it to any single individual or even team. The politics of science today reward researchers for papers that advance small ideas incrementally. So, one announces some findings; another throws out some conjectures; another makes some connections. By the time somebody actually gives the theory a name, a lot of fingers have been in the soup.

This protects the reputations of everyone involved. If the theory is discredited (as has been the Big Crunch), nobody is *primarily* associated with it. Nobody is the lone mad scientist with the wacky idea. It's more tolerable to stand around at a department cocktail party and admit, "Yes, I did publish some tentative notes on Big Crunch as outlined by Drs. A, B, and C. Drs. X, Y, and Z had something to say about it and that's as far as it went." Safety in numbers.

By the time -- if -- a theory is connected strongly with a single person's name, it's more than likely that he is a johnny-come-lately who managed to seize on a likely prospect; a tireless self-promoter who took a gamble. His main contribution may have been to give the theory a catchy name, like "Big Crunch".

What is the big crunch theory? Is it that that gravitational forces within the Universe will eventually cause it to contract and start getting smaller? If so, this theory has now been totally discounted as we have discovered that the Universe not only continues to expand, but that the rate of expansion is accelerating. There is no known force that would account for this acceleration. There is some force causing this, of course, we just don't know what it is. Dark energy is one of the possibilities, some sort of expansive force from sources that cannot be seen(hence it is called "dark"). Something is making the expansion of the Universe accelerate. Even your teacher doesn't know what it is.

i'm not sure if it can be attributed to any one person... it was more like an observation that if the universe had enough mass, then the expansion would slow and eventually collapse on itself due to gravity,

one thing to note is that rate of the expansion of the universe is called the Hubble's constant, after edwin hubble, who put forth the idea that the universe was expanding, but this is sorta the opposite of what you're looking for

It was actually created by a group of people. Don't know their names.
