To sum it up it's a place that was nothing like a city 30 years ago, but now has more jobs than bedrooms, the amount of office space as small downtown area, and the amount of retail space equivalent to a medium size mall.

It would seem that the debate depends more on political beliefs than any real good or bad qualities. Like everything else in human culture they serve a purpose. When that objective is no longer valid they will go the way of major city complexes... either by switching roles or by something entirely different replacing both.
