I am going to study abroad this coming school year in England. From what I've heard, hostels are the best and cheapest way to travel in Europe. This is a completely new concept for me, so does anyone have any helpful advice about hostels? Are there certain rules of thumb about them? Are there some that should be avoided? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!!!

if you are traveling on a budget and want to meet lots of interesting people, hostels are the way to go. check out the Let's Go guides, as they are written for budget travelers. In those, specific hostels are recommended and they are pretty honest about which ones to avoid.
also, when you join a hosteling organization, like YHA, they will give you rules of thumb to know, like taking your own linens or towels, etc. things to watch for are curfews, fees for linens, whether they have lockers, how loud or rowdy they are, the location and public transportation to and from, etc.
Good luck and have fun. Get those guidebooks and take them with you.

My daughter traveled in Spain, Italy and France.

Most hostels are pretty good.

Try and take you own pillow and towel.

Best suggestion is to sew 2 twin flat sheets together on bottom and one side. This you would insert in sleeping bags that are provided by the hostels.

Just remember to pack it and all other items before leaving.
