There's really no way to tell. Based on what little info there is on the subject, I would argue that stage magic/illusion was invented by the ancient Chinese. The Chinese were, according to my research, the first to use stage magic and illusion.

Magic is the art of illusions. It has existed since the first optical illusions were created. It is an impossible question to answer. Sorry.
