It counts down instead of up. so rather than going 2006, 2007, 2008... it is currently going 10, 9 ,8 .... and it's due to end in 2012
Now the way it works is that they count down from a set position each time, this will be the 13th time (a number of great significance to them) that this has happened in their calender.
It can be assumed that they will predict something good to be happening (although probably not the end of the world) around then, but I suspect life will carry on as normal and they will begin another cycle of counting down

Just people creating drama to make their lives seem more interesting. It's not ending, the world isn't ending (except maybe from global warming but that's got nothing to do with 12-21-2012), so just go on with your life.

They Myan calander from what I remember is done in births or new beginnings. Our term is due to end in 2012, everyone thinks this is the end of the world as we know it but this is simpy the end of the Myan calander and when the planet enters a new age.
