My 3 1/2 month old has been going to bed around 9:00 - 9:30 recently and will often wake up at 5:00 a.m. for a feeding. The problem is, she is WIDE awake after she eats (even if I don't change her diaper and keep all the lights off). Do you have any suggestions to make her sleep longer? She is all smiles at that time in the morning, so it's not like she's crabby or anything. I'll try putting her back to bed, but she'll often she spend the next hour crying (which doesn't make her any sleepier!).

I think you need to persist in putting her back to bed after a feed. Babies need to learn that 5am is not a suitable wake time (unless of course it is - depends on your household). My baby is 3.5 months old also and if he wakes up at about 5ish I put him back in after a feed. He'll fuss for a little while but eventually goes back to sleep - sometimes until about 8.30am! Also, I only change his nappy if i absolutely have to - I find changing it really wakes him up. I also try not to talk or make too much eye contact. You need to treat this feed the same as night time feed.

A full nights sleep for an infant is considered 5 to 6 hours so I don't think that you will be able to get her to go back to sleep. You could try and get her up around 11:00 p.m. and feed her again. It's called a dream feed. You feed them while they are still sleeping. I would feed them half a bottle, then change their diaper, then feed them the rest of the bottle and they slept through the whole thing. I did it to my kids while they were still on formula. Even then they only slept until about 7:30 in the morning. I learned this method from Tracey Hogg's book "The Baby Whisperer". I highly recommend this book to any mother, new or experienced. Usually I don't advocate using feedings to get your child asleep but in this case the baby is already sleeping. Check the book out, it has all kinds of great tips for parenting.

Hey, if she is sleeping from 9pm until 5am your in good shape. A lot of babies don't sleep through the night. I think you should consider yourself pretty lucky.
All I can say is, if you don't think she really really needs her diaper changed, just feed her a bottle while she is still lying in her crib and don't change her diaper.
I know sometimes you have to but it might work that way.
So, lights off, have her lying in her crib and give her a bottle. Don't know if it will work for you or not but it's worth a try.
Good luck.

My 3.5mth old baby goes to sleep at around 9.30 as well after feeding. He will usually fuss a little at around 10.30-11.00 for another feed which I would nurse him lying down without waking him up fully. He still nurses twice throughout the night and I will nurse him without waking him up. I can sleep well too. He usually wakes up around 8 - 8.30am all smiley and energised.

I used to put him in his own crib but he cried a lot and we both ended up feeling cranky and tired. So I don't really care about what people say but I'm sticking to sleeping with my baby. You can give it a try. Hope it works for you. All the best.

You could wake her up about 1 or 2 in the morning and try and feed her and change her diaper, and see if that makes her sleep a little longer. You could also try just puting her in her bed a little later.
Hope that helps.

Maybe try keeping her up a little later... or just accept that 5:00am is wake-up time.
Her sleep pattern is going to change a lot... just when you begin to think she's got it figured out, she'll go through another growth spurt and everything will begin again.
