put both of the variables on one side.

3p + 9p = 4

12p = 4

now divide 4 by 12 p = 1/3

You just gotta remember your basic algebra.

3p=4-9p

3p+9p=4 OR 3p+9p=4-9p+9p
What we've gotta do first is isolate the variable (in this case, p). To do that, move the 9p to the other side (signs get reversed).
OR
In other words, you have to get rid of the -9p. To do that, you ave to add the same amount. But what you do to one side, you have to do to the other (add 9p to both sides).

3p+9p=4
Now combine likes terms.

12p=4
Continue to isolate the p. To do this, we divide the 12 to "get rid" of it.

p=4/12
Simplify.

p=1/3.

Hope that helps.

3p =4-9p
+9p +9p
12p = 4
12p divided by 12 = 4 divided by 12
p = 4/12 or1/3

here are the steps:

3p=4-9p

you want to get "p" by itself...

add 9p to the right side b/c it is a negative...

12p=4

divide both sides by 12...

p=4/12 ..... p=1/3

hope it helps......
