Not only should you float the bag in the tank for a good 20 or 30 minutes, but you should also add water from your tank to the bag slowly over that time.

The water chemistry of an aquarium can be a pretty widely varying thing, and you have no idea what the fish store's water parameter's were. A significant fluctuation in PH alone can do a fish in, let alone taking into account potential Ammonia, Nitrite or Nitrate levels.

You should also net your new fish from the bag rather than dumping the water directly into your tank to prevent cross-contamination.

Good luck with your new fish!

Yes, you need to let him get used to the temperature from his bag water to the tanks temp, the shock of the temp change can cause your fishy stress, I usually leave them floating for a good 15 - 20 Min's and then I let them in, some people do let in some of the aquarium water into the bag leave them a little longer then release, I never have and my fish were fine.

when i started my tank the guy specialized in aquariums said the same thing as yoyo, don't put the water from the bag in the tank. there are different types of bacteria in each tank and it might cause your bacteria levels to become messed up

they tell you it helps the fish adapt, but lets be honest, it's a damn fish. i don't think that it would have the option of adapting to the water temp in the wild. just throw the sucker in the tank. it should survive.
