It's becoming more and more of a problem for me. I love hiking and doing things outdoors, but while others enjoy beautiful views from a high point, I can't even look because it makes me feel dizzy and sick. I also can't look out windows in airplanes, can't climb stairs that are too open, etc. How can I get over this?

You may have to go through desensitizing with a good therapist. You get with someone you feel safe with and trust. They take you to a location where you're afraid and you work through the anxiety. It may take months but most of the time, this is very sucessful. Good luck.

While it will take some work, this might help you. First of all, you need to know that where you are is safe. You need to agree with yourself that you are safe from anything right where you are. In terms of looking down, at first, don't, only look at things nearby, or on the same level that you are on. Work on looking down a little at a time. To a point, I can relate to you. I simply make sure that I am safe, and do not make a move that could jeopardize that feeling of safety.

I have been afraid of heights for many years, but now it's better than it used to be.

First, I decided that I didn't want to be afraid.
Second, I started challenging myself. I climbed stairs, looked down from top floors of buildings, switched light bulbs at home.
I still get dizzy, but I have realized that no matter how afraid I might feel, nothing bad ever happens to me.

Number 1 no one and i mean no one is scared of heights, your scared of the ground really.
Number 2 you will usually grow out of it.

I am still scared of the ground at really high altitudes, but I'm not that scared when I'm in a concealed environment, i.e. the Sears Tower, slowly look out the window of really high places until it becomes less and less awkward for you. Then build into unconcealed environments like the mountains that you hike near.

I think the only way to truly get over your fear is to face it. Try doing things that are up high. Get a little higher each time. You'll eventually be able to go up really high without being so afraid. I'm not a psychologist or anything, but this makes sense to me.
